VETERAN’S DAY

Holiday

Today the kids and I attended the dedication of a brand new Veteran’s Cemetery here in our county. In the previous election, the voters approved (by 20,000 votes) a permanent mill levy to fund this cemetery. It is being built to federal standards in the hopes that one day it will become approved as a National Veteran’s Cemetery.

We decided to go to the dedication today because we want to support the Veterans in our area and also because my brother Troy was singing. Here is he singing The Star Spangled Banner:

They had a very nice ceremony which began with Troy singing The Star Spangled Banner shown above while the U.S. and state flags were raised followed by a flyover provided by the Department of Homeland Security.

After the flyover there were short speeches by several dignitaries including our U.S. Congressman and one of our U.S. Senators as well as two mayors, a few county commissioners, and heads of several military organizations and women’s auxillary clubs. After the many thank you and dedication speeches there was a flag raising ceremony where a flag was raised for each branch of the military. Here are two of the flags.

Ben Steele who is one of the few remaining survivors of the Bataan Death March raised the POW-MIA flag.

In addition to being known for surviving the Bataan Death March, Mr. Steele is also a well known artist. He has produced many drawings and paintings depicting his war experiences, western drawings, and landscape scenes. You can see some of his artwork on his official website, Ben Steele. We know him because he has been a friend of my grandparents for many years. I didn’t get a picture of him raising the flag yesterday, but I do have a picture of Emily with him and his wife from last year when he visited one day. Here is the flag that he raised at the dedication service.

The ceremony ended with TAPS played by one of our U.S. Senators.

It was a beautiful day for the dedication ceremony. There was breeze enough to have the flags fly nicely, yet not windy enough to make it too chilly to be outside in the cool fall air.

Our family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of the veterans and all of the men/women currently serving in our military.

Most people who enter our church’s car show probably spend the day before polishing and clean up their entries.  Not us!  Nope.  We don’t have a fancy car.  In fact, our rig isn’t even entirely painted.  So, there was no need for polishing and prettying it up!  No, indeed.  Tim …
