This is the 3rd book in the Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I noticed that the first book ended as he left to go on a trip to Sligo and the 2nd book picked up after that without much detail about the trip. I wonder if the author will ever go back and write a book about that trip. I remembered that about the 1st to 2nd book when I realized the 2nd book left off with a proposal and the 3rd book picks up after they are married leaving out any details about a wedding.
In this book, I’ve enjoyed seeing how Father Tim has taken in the young boy, Dooley, from the Creek area. In this book, Dooley’s mom makes an appearance as well as some of his siblings whom he hasn’t seen since leaving the Creek area. There is another child introduced from the Creek area. Life isn’t always rosey in Mitford. One of the characters dies in this book, others are aging. Father Tim and his wife Cynthia get lost in a cave during a camping trip. There’s a new policewoman in town. And, enter the age of the computer! Father Tim is not very excited about this.
PERSONAL STORY remembered while reading this book.
I had to laugh at all of the sections which refer to the new computer in Father Tim’s office. (LOL). It reminds me so much of my early working days at the PT office. They were still using a *pegboard* system if you can believe that. They didn’t even have a computer. I had to do the transcription on a typewriter. Everytime I made a mistake I had to start over. Boy, did I learn to type accurately the first time around! After a few months of that I lobbied for a computer and they eventually bought one for transcription purposes. After a few months of using that pegboard system I finally convinced them that we use the computer for bookkeeping as well. That idea didn’t go over very well AT ALL (LOL). Eventually, the boss warmed up to the idea and said he would consent to me giving it a try, but I also had to keep the books by hand for an entire YEAR so the figures could be well compared… ACK! I think that only lasted 6 months or so and then there just wasn’t time to do both anymore and it didn’t make any logical sense at all. Back then I didn’t really realize that I was making history. It’s funny now to think back to a time when I actually worked in an office that didn’t have a computer.
I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series which I’m REALLY enjoying.

Just think of the stories you get to tell your kiddos! 😉 High schools were just becoming popular when I was in high school but you still had to have a boot disc to start them. Even in college it was the same. Oh & my hubby & I had planned to buy one when we got married – a 486 which was THE top of the line then. LOL

GILGAMESH TRILOGY

The last time we studied the Ancients (4 years ago), I borrowed this Gilgamesh Trilogy from someone.  As I was preparing our materials for this year, I remembered that I had planned to purchase this set for our own library the next time we study the Ancients. This summer I …
