Last weekend Amanda and her bike-riding friend, Stacie, rode a 25 mile race in our state games. Here are a few random pictures of Amanda getting ready for the race.
Attaching her Road ID to her ankle. It has my cell phone #, daddy’s cell phone #, our home phone #, etc. – ICE information. My brother bought this for her when she started biking. That was very thoughtful of him! THANKS!
Special shoes to that clip into…….
the bike pedals.
Watching her learn to ride her new bike was a lot like watching her learn to ride a bike for the first time when she was just LITTLE! She reported falling off her bike and into a bush on her first attempt at clipping into the pedals. The bike leaning against a tree.
Front and bike wheels. Mismatched because my brother replaced one of them with a lighter weight one.

The tires.
The brakes…
Caribou Coffee water bottles.
The bike is ready. Now she’s getting ready. Putting a few safety things in the little pouch under her seat.
Putting on her helmet.
Adjusting her sunglasses.
(Presumably) getting some last minute pointers from Stacie just before the race starts.
Stacie ready for takeoff.
Dr. Dermatology (our family dermatologist) getting ready for takeoff. She and her dh rode in a ride with my brother from Portland to Seattle a few weekends ago. Amanda didn’t think she was ready for that ride so she opted out of it.
After they all took off, we went to get some breakfast and then went to wait at the 1/2 way point (see pictures below where Nathan is wearing the hard hat and directing traffic – lol) Here is Amanda when she wasn’t too far from the 1/2 way mark.

Coming into the turnaround at the 1/2 way spot.
Making the turn! At this point several people are there cheering everyone on including Dr. Dermatology’s husband that we met for the first time during this race.
After the 1/2 way mark we followed along and stopped at several spots to cheer her on. This bike ride seemed to be uphill BOTH ways (LOL)!
Kid Quote: “I hate hills.”
Around one of the corners look who we found…. Stacie with a flat tire. BUMMER! She and Dr. Dermatology were riding with each other and making GREAT time. This was so close to the finish line. Stacie had the tire changed and back on, but couldn’t get the little tube thing to work so she couldn’t get it filled with air. Someone with a pickup came along to take her bike and we gave her a ride back to the finish line.
That’ll leave a mark! – Stacie’s leg after the flat tire.
Here she comes! I bet she’s VERY glad to see the finish line. I would be smiling if I had endured that horrendous ride!
Coming up to the finish line.
Crossing the finish line. This is a timed race so someone called out her number while someone else recorded the official time. Her time was 1:44:18. WHOO HOO! She finished 3rd in her age group. We’re SO PROUD of her for trying something new and accomplishing so much in such a short amount of time. She’s only been riding since April.
My brother, grandma & grandpa, and the other kids smiling and congratulating her as she rides past the finish line.
Dr. Dermatology came in first in her age group. Here she’s watching for Amanda to come in.
WHEW… it’s finally over! NOW she can smile!

Amanda reported that she doesn’t think she’s cut out for racing. She enjoys biking, but doesn’t enjoy the pressure of a race. Even so. I’m certain she must feel very proud of her accomplishment. I know we’re proud of her!
