PUMPKIN PATCH

Today Emily reminded me that we haven’t taken Nathan to the Pumpkin Patch for quite a few years. In fact, we’re not sure if we’ve ever taken him. I guess I’ll have to go back through the pictures from the last few years to see. At any rate, some friends of ours were going. We decided we should tag along.

Now. Please don’t laugh, but there really wasn’t a “pumpkin patch.” It was more like a pumpkin wagon this year due to the early October snow and freeze causing many (most?) of the area pumpkin patches to lose their pumpkins. The owner of this wagonload of pumpkins told us they are about the only ones around who even have any pumpkins left.

PhotobucketSo much for taking Nathan to the “pumpkin patch.” No straw bale mazes or hunting through rows and rows of on-the-vine pumpkins to choose just the right one. Nope. Not this year. Today we looked through the wagon to choose our pumpkins. Considering this was the last day, at least they had quite a few to chose from.

PhotobucketNathan had to pick up a dozen or more pumpkins looking each of them over very carefully to see how much they weighed,

Photobucketwhat shape they were, what type of stem they had, etc., ….

Photobucketbefore choosing THE ONE he wanted! All smiles now as you can see in the picture below!
PhotobucketHere are some pictures of the kids’ friends choosing their pumpkins…. “S” climbed up on top to take a look. He’s going to stay the night tonight and carve his at our house.Photobucket“M” looking through all the pumpkins… Em will go to their house tonight to carve her pumpkin.Photobucket

“M” making sure the bottom is level…

I think it passed in spection.

Photobucket

Even though we didn’t have an entire field to look through, I think everyone found a pumpkin that will work for them.

Photobucket
Here’s Em with her pumpkin! I can’t wait until she gets home so I can see how she carved it.

Photobucket

I’m not sure why Josh didn’t want to get a pumpkin, but he didn’t. So, there’s no picture of him sorting through all of the pumpkins and that’s why he’s not in this picture. Aren’t they cute with their pumpkins?

Photobucket

I think we picked the WINDIEST day to go. It was blowing and howling! See Em’s hair all blowing back?

Photobucket

After Tim got home from work, he and the boys busied themselves with the carving. Nathan was SO EXCITED. It’s all he talked about until Tim came home. First. Tim cut off the top.

Photobucket

Nathan stuck his nose in there to smell the inside and wasn’t impressed.

PhotobucketThen he drew the face.

PhotobucketPhotobucketDo you see the resemblance?
PhotobucketTim did most of the carving with Nathan keeping a close eye on the progress…..

Photobucket

When the harder parts were finished, Tim let Nathan cut out the eyebrows.

Photobucket

When the carving was almost complete, Josh has the unpleasant task of cleaning out the inside.

Photobucket

Meanwhile, “S” was drawing, carving, and cleaning his pumpkin as well.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

After the face side was finished then Josh drew and cut out a cross on each of the pumpkins.

Photobucket

He did a GREAT job. I think this is the first time he’s had the opportunity to carve by himself because the last time we bought pumpkins was probably quite a few years ago when he was much younger.

Photobucket

After both sides were finished, I found some tea lights for the boys to put inside.

Photobucket

Here is our pumpkin all lit up.

Photobucket

Here is the “S” pumpkin lit up.

PhotobucketThey’re quite a pair!

PhotobucketAnd the other side with the crosses!

Photobucket

Since we used so many matches getting these things lit up, I decided to let the boys put them in the living room so they could look at them all evening while they were playing X-box, Wii, and whatever else they were playing.

Photobucket

They sure had a lot of fun working on this project this afternoon and evening. Maybe next year we can get to the pumpkin patch before winter hits!

Emily has GREAT timing. She arrived home just as I was finishing this blog entry so now I can include a picture of her with her carved pumpkin.

Photobucket

And here’s a picture of all three girls’ pumpkins.

I loved the pictures! What a fun day! The weather looked cold…but I like it that way. More reason to have a fire and cozy up. Thanks for sharing!

I don't know if pumpkins grow in FL or not, but around here a pumpkin patch is a bunch of loose pumpkins some church sets in a field as a fund raiser! ๐Ÿ™‚

Cindy, these are great! Your pictures are always awesome… S had a blast out there with all the males and the girls had a good time here too. Finally got the "forking" done – LOL! I'm waiting to see pics of the masquerade party last night too. Good Friends/Good Times!

Great photos! Most pumpkin patches here did not allow going out in the field. They had them all picked & strewn about though – no wagons full of them. ๐Ÿ˜‰ We had a much too rainy growing season.

Well…wagon or maze…you got some cute photos! LOL In TX we didn't have fields and had to do the "pumpkin parking lot"….here….well I didn't even realize it was the end of Oct until it was the day to run to the chapel for the outreach. LOL

I find it hard to believe it is Nov we really do feel like we lost a lot of time out of this year. LOL

LITTLE BITES OF HAPPINESS

Nathan’s friend, Noah, came over to hang out today and enjoy one last day of Christmas break before school resumes for both of them tomorrow. On the way home from picking him up at “the bridge,” I asked if the boys wanted some oatmeal for breakfast, but no. They wanted …

COON “HUNTIN”

Early this morning our dog went crazy with barking and howling. ย After the sun rose, we found out what all the commotion had been about as he pointed us toward a coon he had treed during the night! Mid morning the boys decided they needed to take care of the …

DUCK PREP

I’m not sure what’s going on with these duck feathers on my dining room table, but the placemat has been moved over to make room for them! And the Egg Nog has been pushed aside to make room for marinating the duck meat!!    I’m not much for animals, dead …
