Josh has been taking drum lessons for 2 years now, but his progress has been hampered by not enough cymbals. REALLY? ACK! I was barely able to tolerate the noise level with only one cymbal and the rest of the drum kit. He was ready to start back to lessons a few weeks ago. I went in to help him and couldn’t stand it more than 5 or 10 minutes. It was just TOO LOUD! I can’t even handle the noise when I’m in the other room. His practicing (and Nathan’s) literally makes my heart race. If he was to continue then we had to purchase a new drum set. An electronic kit so he can wear his earphones to practice and occasionally he can plug into an amp and turn it down very low.
So, we talked to several of the tech people at our church, the drummer that gives Josh lessons and decided on the
YAMAHA DTXPRESS IV SPECIAL RACK SYSTEM from Musician’s Friend. It arrived on Wed and we put it together Wed night. Not we as in “me”… we as in the boys, Tim, and Josh’s drum teacher, Kyle. I just took pictures and made dinner. Here Josh is reading the directions. Smart boy!
Step one was to put together this rack system.
Kyle put together these parts while Josh worked on the kick drum pedal.

I don’t know anything about pedals, but we decided to go with this one. It’s a
TAMA Iron Cobra Power Glide something or other (LOL).

Finally. It’s all put together enough for Josh, Tim, and Kyle to start listening to the variou sounds and such.

Life is a LOT more peaceful around here now. The boys can practice before Emily gets up in the a.m. (well not at 4:30 when she goes to vb practices, but normal mornings whenever those might return. I guess 4:30 is our new normal since that is 5/7 mornings a week now, but you kwim.) I can take a nap while they’re practicing – that is if I ever have time to take a nap again (LOL). I can help Josh without having to wear earphones which means we end up hollering at each other. And, he can practice without my heart racing now.
LIFE IS GOOD AGAIN!
The best part is that Josh worked really hard all summer long to earn 1/2 of the $$ for this kit. We told him we would pay 1/2 if he could come up with 1/2. That was a big chunk for him to have to come up with, but he was highly motivated. Grandpa and Daddy needed a lot of help this summer. Now Josh has his new drum set. Nathan will pitch in a little bit of $$ as well so he can also have ownership (responsibility for taking care, respect to not abuse it, and motivation to practice) in it. He earned $15 for “blowing the train whistle” for Grandpa!
