My Sister’s Keeper

Lee (The HomeScholar) loaned me this book to read. It’s not one I would have picked up on my own since I wouldn’t have searched for anything like this book. However, I’m glad I read it because it did make me think about things such as genetic matching which I probably wouldn’t have thought much about otherwise. Lee, THANKS for letting me borrow the book. You’ll be happy to know that it’s packaged up and ready to be sent on its way back to you!

One thing I really liked about this book that had NOTHING to do with the story is that the author used a different font for each character and each chapter was told from a different person’s perspective! I’m a visual person so that was a GREAT plus for me (LOL). Be forewarned that there were several “yuck” words that the author could have done without.

This is the story of two sisters, Anna and Kate. One has cancer and the other is a perfect donor match. From cord blood to bone marrow, Anna has donated everything the doctors suggested would cure or extend the life of her sister, Kate. However when the doctors ask for one of her kidneys, she decides that enough is enough and seeks medical emancipation from her parents. Did someone convince her to do this or is it entirely her decision? What does her brother feel about being in the shadows of his sisters? Why do the doctors and ethics review committees not view Anna as a “patient”” There are several peripheral storylines in this book and there is a SHOCKING ending……… DO NOT read ahead!!!

Just popping in to say hello! We are getting ready to head to Cincinnati on Monday morning. My blog time will be diminished greatly while I am gone. I am going to try to update my blog while I am gone if I have time. I like doing it daily. Talk to you soon!

Cynthia! I feel like I am so out of touch with everyone’s blogs (as Emily mentioned). Thanks for reading and writing on my blog during our vacation time.

I’m not typically a Jodi Picoult fan as her stories seem to be a bit intense/sad. I’m not going to read this one so you HAVE to e-mail me and tell me the shocking ending. I LOVE to spoilers.

Please!! 🙂

Have you read any of her other books? I liked the ones I read. She lives near me, about an hour away, down in NH.
Karen

I had to log in, so I hope you don’t get two posts!
Have you read any of her other books? I have not read this one but I liked the others I read. The one I will not read though is The Pact. The subject is too much for me.
She lives just about an hour from me down in NH>

I’m so glad you liked it! It was a VERY different read. My son gave it to me for Mother’s Day – I don’t know if I would have picked it up either. Thanks for mentioning my blog!
See you later,
Lee

Sounds very different to what I tend to read too but also sounds good. I’ll add it to my library list.

I have read a lot of Jodi Picoult books. This one was one of my least favorites. I like her earlier books WAY better. I also felt the ending to this book was a complete cop-out. But I won’t say anymore about that….. 🙂

Karen,
No. I haven’t read any of her other books. Have you ever met the author if she lives that close?

Lisa in ME recommended this book to me. (I didn’t like that _______ Minutes book by the same author.)

There was a family in Denver 5-7 years ago who specifically had a second child in the hopes that it would be an appropriate donor for their 16? yodd. The baby was. Quite creepy, right out of a FICTION book that someone would actually do this.

BLOCK BOOKS

I ran across the “block” books by Christopher Franceschelli three years ago when Charlie was just a baby. I made a note of them in my book file so I would remember to buy one when he was old enough for his first board book.I bought the Alpha Block book …

GILGAMESH TRILOGY

The last time we studied the Ancients (4 years ago), I borrowed this Gilgamesh Trilogy from someone.  As I was preparing our materials for this year, I remembered that I had planned to purchase this set for our own library the next time we study the Ancients. This summer I …
