THE MALE FACTOR

Even though I’m no longer in the traditional M-F/8-5 work force, I welcomed the opportunity to read and review The Male Factor by Shaunti Feldhahn because I observed and encountered many things during my ten “working” years and wondered what she has to say about “the unwritten rules, misperceptions, and secret beliefs of men in the workplace.”
If you like statistics and surveys as well as indepth findings and summaries of both then you’ll enjoy this book.  I appreciate the amount of research that went into this book and I really enjoyed the chapter which described the methodology used in writing, testing, and analyzing the surveys which produced the data for this book.  Shaunti has gone to great lengths to discuss the biggest workplace issues between men and women dedicating an entire chapter to many of these issues including balancing work/family, appropriate dress in the workplace, and more.
I find it interesting to note there are two different versions of this book in print.  One listed under business and finance and the other listed under religion.  The “religion” version of the book I was given to review includes a preface for the Christian reader which says this book includes “additional support, insight, and encouragement to women who aproach the workplace from a Christian perspective.”  You’ll find helpful information for Christian women included in each chapter whether you’re in the corporate workplace or volunteer in a church ministry as well as an entire chapter written to putting it all in perspective from experienced Chrisitan women.
Publisher’s Summary:
Many talented women today risk undermining their careers without realizing it, simply because they don’t understand how they are perceived by their male colleagues and customers.

A startling and confidential exploration of what men privately think about the words and actions of women in the workplace, based on nationwide surveys and confidential interviews with more than 3,000 men, ranging from corporate CEOs to factory workers.

In What Men really Think, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn reveals the inner reality behind men’s views — the unspoken expectations that no man would dare to publicly acknowledge, and no woman would learn from an HR department. These revelations include:

• Men’s unwritten ‘rules’ of the workplace

• How men perceive workplace emotion

• What common situations with female colleagues most frustrate men– and why

• Why revealing clothing can sabotage a woman’s effectiveness

• Why some men think flextime is fine, but equal compensation for it is not

What Men Really Think equips women with the information they need to make informed decisions and compete on a level playing field.

Wow this would be great – I would love to know 'what men think'. I know they are wired differently then women. Still sometimes they seem like such a mystery – and I am surrounded by the male factor in our house. 3 boys and a husband – even the dog is male!! I joke that the benefit is the bathroom is all mine! Mine, mine, mine, mine!! Being the only female has to have some privileges.
