GOING TO THE SUN

PhotobucketLast Sunday we went up the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the Montana side of Glacier National which is a SPECTACULAR 52 mile, two-lane highway built back in 1932 which spans the width of Glacier National Park from east to west.

We entered on the east side and went almost all the way to the west side before turning back to retrace our path. While traversing this road, we encountered all types of terrain from glacial lakes and cedar forests in the lower valleys to the alpine tundra atop the pass. I’ll post some pictures of each of these areas in soon-to-come blog entries.

PhotobucketThe morning fog was pretty thick at time making the road hard to see.

PhotobucketWe were hoping the fog would burn off by the time we returned so that Michaela wouldn’t miss the beautiful mountain scenery.
PhotobucketBy the time we had lunch and came back the fog had burned off and we had a gorgeous drive back down the mountain.
PhotobucketI want to show pictures of the road for Michaela’s mom’s sake. She is a little worried about us driving through the Alps when we’re traveling from Germany to Italy in a couple of weeks. I’m guessing (hoping might be a better word) that road can’t be much worse than this road! It’s actually a decent road, but there’s very little margin for error.
PhotobucketThe Going-To-The-Sun Road was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and in 1985 is was made a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Click on the link in the previous sentence to read about the process of building this magnificent road.

German note for Michaela’s friends and family: Die naechsten Bilder sind extra fuer dich, Mama. Sie zeigen die Strasse im Glacier National Park, die wir gefahren sind. Du brauchst dir also keine Sorgen zu machen, dass wir in den Alpen Probleme mit den engen, kurvigen Strassen haben werden.

As I was looking at your pics I was thinking "just like the roads in Europe that I don't like driving"…. only difference is that some drivers will be speeding up and down the roads and not staying on their side of the line in the curves

You're blogging again. I'm glad I checked.

THIS is what the roads were like on our mountain drive to the Northern tip of Honshu. Narrow, windy, two lanes…but narrowing to one lane often….except we had no guardrails and the trees are so thick that you really couldn't see what the drop off would be.

I LOVE Going to the Sun Hwy….how fun to see photos of it again. Good memories. Thanks.

I loved that road when we were on it! It is so beautiful, and quite an amazing feat of engineering! I can't quite imagine driving it in the fog, though–scary. It is narrow!
I enjoyed those pictures!!

MUSEE RODIN

One of the many things on my Paris “hope to see” list was the Musee Rodin.  Because we had a mile-long list of things to see today and because I was the only one with this on their must-see list, we opted to make this a very quick stop (as in probably only …

BIKING THROUGH PARIS

If I don’t already sound like a broken record when I say I researched all of the xyz options for abc before we booked our trip (or chose this crockpot or picked that curriculum, etc), just stick around awhile and I’m sure you’ll eventually come to that conclusion (LOL) since …

A.M. VISIT TO EIFFEL TOWER

I’m sure everyone would have preferred to sleep in a little longer today (9/26), but again, trying to avoid jet lag I scheduled us to be up and out of the hotel by 7:00 a.m. I actually wanted to leave at 6:30 but Michaela thought that was way too early …
