I love the photo of your youngest helping her. So sweet. I'm glad she's made a good recovery!
My 97 1/2 year old grandmother whom we affectionally call GG fell and broke her hip the day before New Year’s Eve. Actually, she claims her hip broke causing her to fall and the doctor said she may very well be correct. She consented to surgery stating she wished to not be bed ridden and would like the opportunity to walk again. The doctors said her only risk factor was her age :). She replied that it was too bad her body was giving out so soon which brought a chuckle to the faces of the doctors and nurses assembled before her surgery.
After the surgery she only had to spend a few days on the recovery floor before being moved to the rehab floor. The second day on the rehab floor she took a bit of a downward turn requiring a blood transfusion. Nathan was so worried about GG that he wanted to make a late night stop to visit her after one of his basketball practices. She was asleep when we arrived, but I went ahead and woke her up so Nathan could visit with her. He was very attentive toward her inquiring if she was in any pain, whether or not she needed any water or anything else, and suggested she have a drink of her “milkshake” which she said sounded good. Rather than get her up and situated to handle the cup on her own, Nathan offered to help her. Isn’t he the SWEETEST little guy putting into action the following verse?
I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Mathew 25:36
After the blood transfusion, GG made considerable progress and was up and playing cards by the weekend when our entire family went for a visit. Her room wasn’t large enough to accommodate all of us so we headed to the rehab floor’s dining room where we played quite a few games of cards.
The rehab dining room has a refrigerator stocked with all kinds of things which the patients can help themselves to. Josh took charge of making sure GG had plenty of snacks and beverages during our card games!
We all took turns playing Solitare with GG while the rest of the family played Nerts which is somewhat similar to Solitare. GG was very interested in how we were playing the game which looked so similar, but was oh so different.
I could tell that she just didn’t understand the game, but she was happy to sit and watch for part of it. I could tell she was trying to figure out what in the world we were playing by the way she kept adjusting her glasses (LOL).
Nerts tends to get a little on the loud side sometimes. At one point, a nurse came into check on GG and said they could hear us clear out in the hallway. We apologized and said we’d be more quiet, but the nurse said it was quite alright and they welcomed the sound of joyous noise coming from the dining area.
GG managed to stay up enjoying all of the activity for a couple of hours. It was nice to have this opportunity to spend an afternoon with all of our kids and GG gathered together in one spot. I love the smile on her face in the picture below.
GG is now back home at my mom’s house and doing pretty well all things considered.
