I was too lazy to go across the road to get a picture of the entire length of our house, but this is good enough for showing you a few things that we’ve done in the front flower beds lately. I’ll have to point out a few things in this picture to show you other things down below. First, you can barely see the new hydrangeas if you look closely under the window at the left of the door. You can barely see some of the white hydrangea flowers right at the bottom of the window. Second, I’m thinking about trimming the big bush on the right hand side of the flower bed back quite a bit and I’ll show you why down below. Third, below I’ll point out something to the far left of the above picture. You can barely see the edge of a tall bush in fron the far left window. That’s right at the edge of our house which I’ll talk about below.
Here you can see a few more of the things in this flower bed. I realize the partial sun/partial shade isn’t the best time to take a picture, but this is the only time I’m going to have today for such things as taking pictures and blogging.
Here’s a better picture of the three hydrangeas. I had three of them planted here before in a triangular pattern, but none of them survived. Evidently, I didn’t have a variety hardy enough for our winters.
I see this Annabelle variety all over town so I’m hoping they’ll do well. I decided to plant them in a straight row this time instead of in a triangle pattern.
The second thing I pointed out above is this big bush on the right side of our house.

You can barely see in the picture above that I have the lower parts trimmed back toward the bottom on the right side of it which makes room for the Ninebark to the right of the bush and some elephant ear hostas near the cement edging.

I’m thinking about taking some of these hostas which are two deep in some areas out of here

and moving them to here… I think I’ll also trim up that big bush so it’s not so full toward the bottom right at the cement edging and then I could fill in some of these same hostas all along there even in front of that big bush. I like the big bush to be full so that it protects the rest of the flowers to the east of it from the harsh west winds. Some time I plan to plant some big ferns back in this area as well now that the big bush will give enough shelter for them.
It’s too bad you can’t see all of this color from the road! There’s a ton of this ground cover which I plan to let fill in most of this entire area. I suppose it’s not the best idea to have the hostas in front of them, but I really think I will like the look of the hostas going along that entire edge of the right side of the house. What do you think?
I don’t remember what these purple/pink things are called, but they came from my grandma’s house years ago.

Now for the third thing I was pointing out in the picture above. This big bush at the left side of our house. You can see all of the dirt to the left of it. That’s all the dirt the guys have been hauling in to make the big 8′ waterfall. You can sort of see how it goes down into a ditch type thing. That will all be filled in with washed rock and edging to make it really look like a creek where right now it just looks like a pile of dirt with a ditch running through it (LOL). As part of that landscaping phase, this big bush will be taken out and we’ll replace it with some aspen trees and a few other bush things a little further out from the house and we’ll also be taking out the flagpole which will go to the other side of the driveway whenever we get around to that phase of the landscaping. We don’t like to put the flag up here because the light shines in our bedroom window.

Here’s a broader look at the dirt area using the flag pole as a marker. You can see the big rocks… that’s where our driveway used to be and if you look to the back of the picture you can see the big cottonwood tree with the driveway that now wraps around behind it. Oh.. and the sidewalk you see below will also come out and there will be a little bridge there which will go over the creek whenever we get to that phase.

Most of that is beyond me… most of that is Tim’s doing. My project and what I’m looking for suggestions about is whether I trim up that bush so that I can transplant some of those hostas all along the cement edging. At least you’d be able to see that from the road since you can’t see the groundcover! What do you think?
