Today is Flag Day! I know somewhere I have a bunch of pictures of the flagpole we have in front of our house, but I’ve not been able to find them quickly this morning (I feel another blog entry coming on regarding programs for sorting ditial pictures). I’m going to post a picture of Josh wearing this patriotic shirt instead.

I’m ashamed to admit that we no longer have a U.S. flag. Last year, we turned ours in to one of the places in town that properly disposed of it since it had become worn and frayed. I didn’t remember that we still need to purchase another flag until I looked at the calendar and realized *TODAY* is Flag Day. We used to fly our flag EVERYDAY, but it got to be too much work to plan to be home to lower it each evening before dark. We added a spotlight so we could leave it up all the time. That didn’t work very well because the light shone right in our bedroom window! We continued to occasionally put it up during the day when we knew we would be home to bring it in before dark. We quit doing that after coming home from town one day to find our flag flying in inclement weather – howling wind and pouring rain – in which it wasn’t meant to be flown. Perhaps this summer we can find a new flag that will withstand inclement weather and move the flagpole & spotlight across the driveway so we can leave it up day and night. If you want information regarding our flag history and etiquette, check out the USA Flag Site They also have links to patriotic songs and pictures. They also have suggestions, activities, and resources for teaching kids about patriotism.Do you have a flag? Do you fly it everyday or only on special days such as today?

I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with liberty and justice for all.

Happy Flag Day, everyone!

Do you know, I don’t have a Union Jack!

I can tell that Americans value and honour their flag in ways that the British don’t. I was confused about this until I read of book of advice to American servicemen stationed in the UK during WW2. It said that the Monarch (then the King) holds the same position, of representing and embodying the nation, that the US flag does. So, to make fun of the monarch, in Britain, would be as offensive as a British person ridiculing the flag in the US.

This started to make a lot of sense and explained some subtle, yet key, cultural differences between us.

Now I understand why your flag is so important to you guys and why ours is of little consequence to us.

That was a good post, Cindy.

Hey Cindy!
Boy you are good! I totally forgot it was flag day! I am going to have my kids read your post!
Thanks for being one of my faithful commenters on my blog 🙂
I am catching up on blogs now that school is out.
Take Care!

Most people who enter our church’s car show probably spend the day before polishing and clean up their entries.  Not us!  Nope.  We don’t have a fancy car.  In fact, our rig isn’t even entirely painted.  So, there was no need for polishing and prettying it up!  No, indeed.  Tim …
