THE FALL BALL!!!

We had heard about the Fall Ball in the past, but we’ve never had any reason to consider going until this year when Emily decided she would like to attend. We know quite a few people who attend so the dads can be “back up” for any girls who find themselves without a dance partner. After a little convincing, Tim said he would go and do the same for Emily. However, when he heard that some of the moms go then he insisted that I go as well. I was NOT THRILLED about this. I wanted it to be a daddy/daughter thing. But, ok. Fine. I have a dress and I know people with whom I can SIT and visit with while watching and taking pictures. IOW, I had NO INTENTION whatsoever of actually dancing.

I figured I would go and video/photograph Tim and Emily while they did the practice run through that morning. However, Tim ended up having to work and didn’t get to go to the practice which meant I had to practice at the practice… and not only practice… but find someone to practice with since Em was already paired off with friends. After I got over the embarassment of having to practice with people I didn’t even know (actually that was probably a GOOD THING!) I found that I REALLY ENJOYED myself. Afterwards, I found myself looking forward to the ball instead of dreading it as something to get through for the sake of our daughter (LOL). That was NOT good news for Tim because now that meant I was “into” it and well… you all know what happens when I get “into” something…. it’s all or nothing (LOL). Before I get to the rest of the story, here are a few pictures from the rehearsal. I didn’t get very many pictures of the rehersal because *I* was practicing (LOL). However, there were a few people who stayed and practice longer and I took some pictures at that time.

Notice our friend, Jill, in the next 3 pictures. *SHE* is the other one to “blame” for us giving this whole ballroom dancing thing a try. She went last year and ended up having such a great time she convinced me that Tim and I should go.

After Emily’s hair was finished (see updo blog entry) we went to a friend’s house to get ready. I helped her with her dress and a few other last minute things before I had to go to worship practice. Emily rode to the ball with our friends and Tim & I met her there after we were finished with church. Here is Emily all dressed up and ready to go!

Here she is with her friend who helped her get ready for the ball. She also went dress shopping with us a few weeks ago. She made her colonial style dress which is BEAUTIFUL.

Speaking of dresses. We were fortunate to find a dress that Emily liked after only a couple of hours of shopping. Thankfully, her Grandma Jean was able to make straps for the dress out of some extra fabric that came with it. She also hemmed it up.
Being goofy at Grandma’s house while working on he dress.
Here is Emily with 2 of her friends… the one from above plus the other friend who convinced her to go to the ball after showing video of last year’s spring ball at her birthday party!
Emily had to sit out one dance while we went in the bathroom and taped up a few spots where the hem had come down. Our friend, Jill from a few pictures above, came prepared with tape, needle/thread, and stapler (LOL)! She’s a first rate mom, for sure – always prepared for anything! Here is Em at the ball.

Tim & I danced about 1/3 of the dances together and I danced a few more with other people and with Emily while Tim took pictures. Here we are in our formal attire. We had to get dressed at church and we thought we waited long enough that most people would be gone by the time we came out of hiding. However, that was NOT the case. There were all kinds of people still in the hallway. Of course, they gave Tim a pretty bad time >VBG>.

Going into the day we didn’t know ANY of the dances… had never even heard of most of them. We danced the Pattycake Polka, Virginal Reel two times, Scottish Polka, and the Mayflower. We didn’t even attemp the hardest one which was the Posties Jig…. maybe next time (LOL) we’ll attempt it and one of the waltzes. We also did a couple of the mixers – the Circassian Circle and the Mayflower. I happened to notice someone I knew over the by chair where our camera was and it looked like she was sitting out that dance. So, I ran over there and asked her to take a few pictures of us doing the Virgina Reel. I’m SO GLAD she took these for us because they are the ONLY proof I have that Tim and I actually danced (LOL).
Fortunately, I remembered from practice that you do NOT want to be at the head of the Virgina Reel unless you know what you’re doing. The farther back you are in the line the more chances you’ll get to see it before it’s your turn to go through the middle of everyone! We were the 3rd ones from the front. We would probably have preferred to be farther down the line, but we did just fine after watching the first two couples.
Both lines come together then you go left hand across and twirl under (not sure what the real term for this move would be) and then the right hand and then both hands followed by dosie doe.
When it’s your turn to lead out you shuffle down to the end of the line inbetween both rows of men/women and back to the front where you start the reel. Here we are coming back from the end of the shuffle.

After you come back to the beginning then you reel (I guess that’s what it’s called anyway) where you turn 1 1/2 turns with your partner then each partner swings off and goes around once with the next person in line…. then 1 turn around with your partner then you break apart and turn around once with the next person in line… all the way to the end of the line where you then turn all the way around and shuffle back to the head of the line again.

After you get back to the head of the line you circle around and go to the end of the line with the rest of the people following each of you. When you get to the back of the line you do a London Bridge thing where each couple meets and goes under with the couple behind you going to the head of the line and you staying at the end. Here we are doing the bridge and completing our turn to lead the Virginia Reel.

I still can’t believe what a great time we had! This ball is sponsored by a local church. They open in prayer and end with the entire group singing the Doxology. There is no alcohol, strict dress code, etc so it makes it a very nice family event. Tim said he had a good time and I’m pretty sure we’ll be going again in the Spring! I’ve already marked our calendar. Now, we’re hoping some of our friends will go with us next time. One of the singers from the worship team was there with his fiance. We’re hoping some of our small group friends or fellow band members might want to join us. There’s nothing to fear. It was a TON OF FUN! And, we think you might enjoy it. We did. And, afterall…. if we can do it, ANYONE can do it! (LOL).

Oh HOW fun that looks! I love to go dancing. We try to go every weekend that Doug is off. We especially like to dance to the band he runs sound for. But even icky bands will do in a pinch lol.

I enjoy your blog and all our pictures. I’m very visual 🙂

Wow that looks fun and a great experience for the young ladies and gentlemen and the older ones too from the sounds of it!

Great pictures!

Dorothy,
This was a ball sponsored by a church. It was not a homeschool exclusive ball, but there are quite a few homeschoolers that go.

Kelly,
I knew that you and your dh like to go dancing and I thought of you while pondering whether or not I really should give this a try (LOL).

SEQUENCE

Nathan, Tim, and I played a lively game of Sequence this evening.  I should have won the first round, but SOMEONE had to open up their mouth and let on to someone else my strategy which was to win 2 sequences with one last chip!  That play fell through and …

EARLY MORNING VIEW

I love that the days are getting longer!   There was a beautiful view of the moon early this morning which reminded me of this song by Steven Curtis Chapman.   …”Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee…   Holy. Holy, holy…”

TICKLER FILES

I have always used a Tickler Filing system for bill paying and other things which have dated deadlines.  I have 6 such red files which are numbered with the dates as follows:  1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25, and 26-31.  I don’t have enough dated deadlines to warrant a file for …
