Tuesday night, we attended our local homeschool athletic association’s annual awards banquet. I’m not sure why it’s called a “banquet” since it was a dessert event, but that’s beside the point (LOL). This is an event where they recognize all of the teams and players from 5th grade through high school for all the sports activities for this school year.
I took the above photo at one of the school’s where the girls had a volleyball game. There was a nice brick wall which I thought would work well for a background. There was a pop machine giving off some light which I thought would work well for the portrait type shots.
Emily has a very unique serve (LOL)!! The above shot is one of my favorites because of the level of intensity it shows. Arms poised. Fingers spread. Knees bent. Eyes on the ball. I’m especially happy that everything in this picture is clear. The ball looks as if it’s just hanging there in midair (LOL). YEA for the new lens!

Getting ready to smack it over the net!
I won’t list all of her stats here, but one that we found rather impressive was her number of aces – 62% – which wasn’t too bad for her first year of high school play. Here she’s having a quiet moment before one of the games.
If homeschoolers had cheerleaders, Em would be one of them. More often than not, she has a very positive attitude and she hangs right in there cheering her team on and encouraging the other team mates right up until the very last play.
In the picture below, I can almost hear her saying, “Let’s go girls. We’ve got this now. Come on. Let’s do it.”
She’s definitely not one of the girls the coach has to encourage to talk on the court! She’s very good at hollering out for help or letting everyone know she has it.
This year her main position was setter. I LOVE the picture below. It’s one of the few that I captured with her mid air with the ball actually IN the picture (LOL). I think I can work with the picture before I print it to fix the lighting, but I didn’t want to take time to do that now. The ball isn’t as sharp as I’d like it to be, but overall it’s a decent picture – certainly much better than the ones I used to get with my old lens.
Here are some pictures that show Em in a variety of setter positions.

She makes it look so easy (LOL).

Another thing I admire about Em is that she’s not afraid to go for the ball.
I think each of the girls had a turn at being team captain. Here Em and the head coach are talking to the refs before one of the games.

Because this game went to the 3rd match (or is it a game – I always get that mixed up) as team captiain, she had to go to the net to flip a coin to see which side they would play on and which team would have the first serve.

This particular game was a very sweet win for the girls because it was against a AA public school team! I had gone out into the hallway before the start of this match (or game?) and saw some of the girls on the other team crying and saying they COULD NOT let themselves lose to a “homeschool” team. They did lose and it was a very exciting win for our girls.
We weren’t sure how well Em would play coming into high school level play as a sophomore having taken off her freshmen year. She worked very hard at practice and spent hours and hours working on her serves and sets here at home. We found out at the awards banquet this week that she received the MVP award! YEA EM! We are so proud of her stick-to-it-iveness and give-it-all attitude no matter the score!
