WINTER BERRIES – DAY 64 of PROJECT 365

I’m not sure what kind of berries these are, but I really like them. They are found out in the hills near our home. I think they are so pretty against the dark green leaves.

UPDATE: Dorothy noted in the comment section that these might be Juniper berries. I googled that and that does appear to be what they are. I called dh because I knew he would know what they are and he agreed that’s what they are, but it’s also sometimes called Cedar. Now that I think of it I knew I remembered a distinct smell. The berries are edible and you can roast the seeds and use them like coffee beans. For more information you can visit this website.

Cynthia,

They look like Juniper berries to me.

Juniper berries are used in cooking here (don’t try it in case they are the wrong kind!) and also give gin its distinctic flavour.

Squish one between your fingers and see if you recognise the smell.

Today Nathan went to work with Grandpa.  He packed his own lunch/snack and water bottle, grabbed his coat, and away he went.  He had quite the story to tell when he arrived back home because they evidently got the truck stuck!
