WISDOM TEETH – DAY 103 of PROJECT 365

I’m going to put today’s P365 picture a little further down in the page so you can have FAIR WARNING what’s coming. If you continue to scroll down the page you are going to see B’s wisdom teeth which were pulled today.

I can’t help but wonder WHY they are called “wisdom teeth.” So, I *had* to do a little research which I’m sure won’t come as any surprise to most of the people who read my blog.

The English words, “wisdom teeth,’ are drived from the Latin dens sapientiae which means wise man. Evidently, the general thought is that wisdom teeth often appear much later than the other teeth at an age when people are supposedly “wiser” than they were when their childhood teeth erupted. They usually arrive between the ages of 17 and 24 and are considered 3rd molars. The Turkish language refers to them as the 20th teeth since they usually arrive when a person is around 20 years old. Korean’s call them “love teeth” because young people get them about the same time they tend to fall in love. The Japanese call them Oyashirazu which translated means “unknown to the parents” from the idea that they erupt after a child has moved away from home. My own wisdom teeth arrived after I was married and my parents were fortunate to not have to pay for the removal of mine (LOL)!

The latter two descriptions held true for my own wisdom teeth, but not for our daughter. Her wisdom teeth seem to have arrived a little EARLY! If you want to see what they look like – here they are. No, there were not five teeth. They were all impacted and it appears that they had to break one of them to get it out of the bone so you’ll see five parts in the picture if you look closely enough which I wouldn’t really recommend!

Ewwww! Gross. 🙂 Cool. Thanks for the warning (I was going to look anyway–ha). The history on wisdom teeth was fun. I like the Love Teeth one.

Wow…those are big teeth! I never saw mine. The doctor took them out and I guess disposed of them before I woke up.

Doug has 8 wisdom teeth. Weird, eh? They are impacted in his mouth and embedded in the bone. Unless they ever bother him, they are staying put. Something about nerves and sinus cavities. I’m hoping they never have to come out!

Kelly,

8 is a lot! WOW… and they don’t bother him? That’s good…. I hear it really hurts to have to have them dug out! She had a couple that were impacted.

Kathy,

I knew there would be some people who might appreciate seeing them (LOL) so I posted a pic.

When my oldest son, Eric, had four baby teeth pulled the dentist gave him his teeth. The roots where HUGE!! They were really nasty looking. In fact he kept them for 2 years in the fridge. He just threw them out this year. lol
Laura

Laura,
EWWW… that’s a LONG time to keep them. I’m not sure how long dd will keep hers, but right now they are hanging on our refrigerator door (LOL)!

Okay, might I just saw that’s just plain weird! LOL Good thing it was teeth rather than say tonsils? LOL Great homeschool project though! I was in my 20’s when I had mine out – well just three – they left one in. Definitely NOT fun. I wake up from anesthesia bawling. I remember asking hubby why he was crying – because I was! LOL 🙂 He was just plain loopy – he had his out about six years ago.

Cleaning the oven doors has been on my to-do list for quite some time!  Over the weekend, I searched Pinterest and other kitchen cleaning sites to try to find the best way to clean the film off from the inside of the glass. Ordinarily, this film would probably disappear during …
