ONLINE PHOTO STORAGE

Awhile back I told you all that I was at my limit for photo storage space on blogger and they’ve only gone back to December of 2006. When they go back further I’m sure I’ll be completely out of room. I really don’t want to move my blog address right now so I needed to figure out something different for online photo storage. I’m reporting back that I’ve been doing a combo of things since realizing I’m out of space on blogger.

1. I’ve been uploading photos through photobucket . Many thanks to Susie of Bluebird Blogs for suggesting this option. She’s creating a new blog design for me which I can hardly wait to have installed any day now!

a. After I uploaded the first few photos, I realized that it might even be a little faster to upload through photobucket mostly because I can upload a BUNCH of pictures at one time and I’ve not run into any errors with it at all. Uploading through blogger I seemed to have a lot of problems including photos not showing up and getting an error 404 (or whatever that code used to be) and then I would have to start all over again chosing the files to upload.

b. It’s also very easy to resize and rotate through photobucket. Just a couple clicks of a button and it’s all done. This is much faster than rotating through my windows photo program. I haven’t taken the time to compare the actual size of the uploaded picture since it no longer matters.

c. You can store up to 1000 pics for free on photobucket.

d. Easy to install. After you load your pictures and do any editing you want to do, photobucket gives you a code. You simply click copy and then paste it into your blog entry. You do this through bloggers HTML mode instead of compose mode in the create new post area. After the code is there, you can click back over to compose mode to see how it looks and to journal. Or, you can journal right there in the HTML code, but I like to journal in compose mode instead.

e. Another reason I prefer loading pictures to blogger from photobucket is that I can move the picture to the left/right/center by clicking on the “center” button in the blogger compose mode. With blogger you have to tell it where you want the pictures BEFORE you upload. I think this will be a nice feature although I haven’t yet taken the time to figure out how to get any journaling to appear to the side of a picture yet. I’ll work on that another day.

f. One last thing I can think of off the top of my head is that photobucket will give you a code for each individual picture. Or, you can click all of the ones you want to load into a single post and it will create a code for ALL of those pictures at one time. So, you could literally upload a dozen or more pictures with the click of ONE button and that is DEFINITELY faster than uploading them each individually through blogger. Again, because it’s SO FAST to upload pictures through photobucket and then you just copy the code to blogger.

2. I’ve been doing more with slideshows and collages. Both of these websites are also pretty quick and easy. It’s been a fun way to load a lot of pictures into one post (or the sidebar) when I’m not planning to journal much about each photo.

3. I haven’t really limited the photos that I’m uploading to my blog that much, but I do at least think 2x about it now before I upload it somewhere (LOL).

4. This summer my plan is to reorganize all of my photos and start updating my albums. When I do that I plan to go back through my blog and delete some of the pictures that I know no one else will care to see again (LOL)… like the 3 dozen or so sequence shots when I was showing how my camera will shoot continuous mode (LOL).

I know a few of you out there in blogosphere were waiting for my report regarding how I’m uploading pictures now that blogger only gives you a certain amount of free storage space through picasa. It’s working just fine to do the above and I’m glad I took a few minutes to give this a try before deciding to start a whole new blog. I really didn’t want to lose all of the recipes and other things I’ve already uploaded.

I hope that helps some of you who are in the same boat I’m in regarding space issues on blogger.

I’m glad you were able to come up with a good solution, Cynthia. I don’t load nearly as many pictures as you do and am no where near the end of my storage, but it is good to know there is a good alternative out there.

Cindy – I have been using photobucket ever since blogger told me I only have less than 22 % storage left. I only use blogger when I need to upload a picture or two. For the times when I do more . . it’s only photobucket
Glad to see you are using that too!

I’ve also been curious as to what you were going to end up doing with your blog. I was afraid you were thinking of stopping because of the picture storage problem. Whew. I’m so glad you are going to continue.

Thanks for sharing all that info about Photobucket. Very interesting!

Cynthia,

I don’t know what you’ve done but suddenly your blog is really easy for me to read again!

Before, it’s taken up to 10 mins to load and then, if I try to comment, it takes another 5 mins to get the comment box and another 5 to get back to where I was.

Now it’s all instant! Wow! That’ll encourage me to come back more often!

Kathy,
I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue blogging either. I just haven’t had much time lately and on top of that I had to figure out what to do about the photos. Photobucket was easy to figure out so I was able to continue without TOO much brainpower spent on figuring out what to do.
And.. if dd moves away I will want to continue so she can see what we’re up to all the time.

Dorothy,
The only thing I’ve done differently is upload photos to photobucket instead of blogger and I resize the photos very quickly on photobucket. On blogger the photos seemed to be pretty large… maybe the photobucket ones really are a smaller size and take less time to load? That’s my only geuss. I don’t know whyt he comment section would take a long time to come up.

At any rate. I’m glad it’s working better for you! Thanks for stopping by again.

This is definitely helpful.

I’ve been resizing through Fast Stone and have only increased my space by 2% in two months.

When you go through and delete photos, you’ll need to go through your Online Picasa account through which your photos were loaded (even though you didn’t know it at the time) and delete from there. If you just delete photos from your blog posts, it will NOT lower your space, since the photos are still taking up space on your Picasa acct . . .

Thanks, too, for letting me know about this post. I’m still not reading list e-mail and I am definitely interested in other options like this!!!!

And you know that I was having the same troubles as Dorothy, but your blog has been easy to load again for the past week. 🙂

cindy –

You also removed a lot of the big photos in your sidebar….I’ve noticed the site loads much quicker now too.

I’ll have to check out photobucket some day! LOL I’m at 70 something percent….it’s not a high priority yet. LOL AND now I know where to come to get detailed instructions. LOL

FYI

The chinese dragon picture posted out of order so if you happened to see it the other day, you may want to look below it now because there are 4 or 5 new posts one of which has a couple funny “tater” stories.
