JULY 15TH – GARDEN BLOGGERS BLOOM DAY – DAY 196 of P365

Last month I posted a blog entry about the Garden Bloggers Bloom Day which you can go back to read if you want more information. I took these pictures on the 15th right before we headed out of town, but I didn’t have time to upload them until this morning. So, here are the pictures of what was blooming in our flower beds on the 15th of July. We actually have quite a few more things blooming, but I only photographed the things that are in bloom now that weren’t in bloom on June 15th. So, all of the roses you see in my entry mentioned above and many other things are STILL blooming. THESE photos are the new things:

These are some of my favorite daylillies. I planted them late last year after spotting them at Home Depot. They are much shorter than all of our other daylillies and I LOVE the deep, dark, burgundy color. They weren’t in our landscape design plan, but I liked them and so I planted them (LOL).

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketYou can see the above daylillies right behind these purple things which I should know the name of and will probably think of it right after I publish this entry. Anyway, I like how the colors coordinate.. the center of this flower with the daylillies in the background. If I had known I was going to plant those daylillies I probably should have had them trade places since these purple ones are taller, but it’s too late now. It all works fine because I can see the shorter daylillies out of our bay window which is nice.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketBelow are the daylillies that WERE in the landscape design plan for this area.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThese daisies are to the left of the daylillies above. I don’t think I planted the right thing though. I think I was supposed to plan a flower with more yellow in them to get us from the yellow centered daylillies above to the yellow roses that are on the other side. I like these daisies I just don’t like them where I planted them. I spent this year getting all of the drip system drippers reorganized… maybe next year I’ll reorganize some of the plants (LOL).

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThese daylillies are out in the front yard by our sidewalk. They aren’t on the drip system and do amazingly well for the little water they receive. They have been in the flowerbed FOREVER!! A few years ago (5 or 6) I decided to plant a couple of things at the front of the house and this is as far as I got… the rock and daylillies.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThese little guys are SO CUTE! I mentioned them on June 15th. They are plants from my grandma’s flower bed years ago. I was disappointed that there was only one on June 15th and I was excited to see that there are now more which makes me hopeful that I’ll have a nice batch of them next year now that they are getting some water and care. You can also see the purple flowers in the background. That ground cover is also from my grandma’s flower bed.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketMore daylillies. These are at the back of the house. They are *NOT* the right color. I didn’t want more orange/yellow ones since I have so many of those at the front of the house. I don’t remember what color these were supposed to be now that a year has passed since I planted them, but I do know that they were mismarked… and so I ended up with the traditional orange/yellow color instead of whatever other color I thought I was getting. IF (and that’s a BIG IF at this point) we ever prepare so more flower beds I will move these somewhere else and plant a different color here, but right now I don’t have anywhere else to put them or I’d move them now.

I showed the Yarrow on June 15th, but I’m posting another photo since there are new little ones coming up again. Sadly, I haven’t even had time to cut off the old flowers so I was quite surprised to see some new ones coming from down below.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketI think I forgot to take a photo of our clematis last month so I’m posting it now. It’s almost done blooming. This plant has been here for a very long time. My mom planted it here years ago when she lived in our house.. over 16 years ago.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThat’s all for this month’s Garden Bloggers Bloom Day!

Oh my! Cynthia this is fabulous!! I want to do something like this but have no idea where to start. My soon to be hubby has no lanscaping in the yard. I can’t wait to plant a flower bed. I should just read a book about it! I’ll have to put that on my library list! :o)

Beautiful, I really love it! Great job!

Wonderful flowers, Cynthia. Your beds are looking very nice.

Is your drip-system working well? We have had quite a bit of rain, so no watering needed here.

Can’t wait to see what you have blooming next month.

Thanks for participating in Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day. Your purple flowers look like coneflowers. Isn’t it great to have flwoers from your grandmother? One day you can give starts of those to your kiddos!

Amy,
We didn’t know where to start either so we did *NOTHING* for the first 15 years we lived here other than planting a few trees here and there. We tried to keep up the flower beds that were already here, but there wasn’t any fabric mat and the weeds just took over. Anyway.. we had a landscape designer draw up a plan for us and that’s how I got started. I’m much more comfortable striking out on my own now and designed the bed on the west side of our house almost by myself (LOL).. a few suggestions from people at the nurseries.

Debbie,

The drip system is AWESOME! There is absolutely *NO WAY ON EARTH* we could keep up these 8 beds without a drip system. Even when we’re gone it’s very easy for dd to handle the watering for us. All she has to do is flip the handle on the pump.

It was a bit of a trick getting the right drippers for each area now that the bushes are established and don’t need daily (in this weather) or every other day watering. But, now I shouldn’t ever have to go back and to that again because the bushes are all established and I won’t be planting any new bushes.

Carol,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, now I remember those are coneflowers. It IS fun to have plants that were from my grandma!

Kristine,
I really like the daylillies, too. I just didn’t want orange ones at the back of the house since I have so many at the front..but I don’t dislike them there enough to transplant them (LOL). This particular variety is quite fragrant. I noticed a very sweet smell tonight when I was out in the backyard and discovered it was from the daylillies.

Linda,
I had a brown thumb before spending all this time WORKING at the flower beds. I’m kind of an all or nothing person so I had a lot to learn in a short amount of time last year. Fortunately, I haven’t lost too many of the things we planted.

Between you and Debbie . . .you all could open a flower shop! Your pictures of your beauties are beautiful!

BALANCING ACT

I don’t think I ever mentioned that I was seeing a Physical Therapist last fall for some knee problems.  They said the knee problems could be related to having a weak ankle caused by so many bad ankle sprains.  They suggested balancing activities. Look at what a great husband I …

EXCAVATION 01.19.2011

This summer will mark our 20th year in our home.  WOW.  I have no idea where 20 years went, but I do know the time has finally come to do something about the backside of our house.  We’ve talked about remodeling/adding onto the kitchen for YEARS, but every year anothe year comes and goes …

Making tracks toward home!  The county road from the pit and hayfield entrance to our house is still covered in mud clumps even a couple days after we were out muddying up our rig for the Father’s Day car show yesterday.
