FREEZER CHALLENGE

1. Upright freezer in garage:

BEFORE: You can see that the freezer isn’t really very dirty, but it is slightly disorganized – notice the frozen salad containers (cool whip containers), and it’s not very full.

AFTER: We now have 16 meals ready to go. Today we are baking zuccini bread and we hope to have enough loaves to fill up the spot to the left of the freezer salad containers. My mom is freezing some peaches which we can make into pies, cobbler, muffins, etc. at a later date. I’ll move the one casserole on the top down toward the bottom and put all of the peaches on the top shelf. I should have waited to take the “after picture” later today when we’re done, but I may not have time later (LOL) so I’ll just post how far we are right now.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketNormally, I try to make 3-4 (or more) batches of each dinner that we make giving us a continual cycle of new freezer meals headed toward the freezer. However, this summer we’ve barely had time to cook anything at home let alone make anything extra. Actually, I should rephrase that because it really doesn’t take more than an extra 15-20 minutes to make 3-4 extra batches of most anything we’re making for dinner. What I should say is we haven’t had time to do anything more than heat up something from Costco or take n’ bake pizza, etc. Now that we’re starting school and co-op starts next week, I decided I better get some meals made ASAP! So, I’ve made a few doubles of things (like the Sweet and Sour Chicken mentioned in a previous entry) and I made a trip to the dinners-served place with some friends and family last week. Here are pictures from that night:

Here Kim is done and hauling her meals out the door!

Amanda decided to come and help us after she got off from work. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting I was SO GLAD she came to help since I wasn’t feeling very well that night. Photobucket - Video and Image HostingShe finished our meals and then helped a few of the other moms finish up their meals.

THANKS AMANDA!

The dinners-served place has THE BEST setup! It’s quite an assembly line.

Here is another friend also named Kim!

Grandma Bonnie (on the right) came to make some dinners for herself and one of her friends who couldn’t make it tonight. My mom, Grandma Jan, on the left.

These meals should get us by until the holidays hit. Hopefully, I’ll be able to keep the freezer well stocked myself. If not, I’ll be headed back there again!

2. Chest DEEP Freezer:

BEFORE: There is only a “before” picture for this freezer because I only defrost it 1x a year when we restock it with beef. Tim’s cousin will be sending another cow into the meat packing place sometime this month. After it’s filled up again and defrosted then I’ll take an “after” picture. This freezer is OLD! We bought it used at a garage sale 20 some years ago and it was probably at least 20 years old when we bought it!

3. Refrigerator Freezer:

BEFORE AND AFTER PICTURE: There really isn’t a before or after in this freezer because it pretty much looks the same all the time. Everytime we go to the grocery store, we clean out our fridge/freezer. About 2x a year I take all of the shelves out and wash the underneath sides of them, the edges of the entire fridge/freezer, the rolling slider things, etc. Since we usually wipe this out and replace food on a weekly (or at least every other week) basis it rarely gets messy or dirty.

One thing I didn’t mention yet is that I replace the odor eating baking soda containers every quarter. It seems to help with freezer smells.

It IS a great place. However, Karen (from SHS) and I are planning to do our OWN dinner-served type thing with a few co-op moms around the first of Nov. We’ll see if it’s enough of a financial savings to warrant all of the extra work!

I’m reading backwards – but I’d love to hear what meals you put in your freezer. Mine is low AGAIN….and I’m going to tackle it again – shortly.

I can’t wait to read how you and Karen set up a cooking plan. I’d like to try that some day.

SILVERWARE

This year I’m participating in the Declutter 365 project.  They started in the kitchen and since my kitchen is fairly new, I don’t have a whole lot of actual “decluttering” to do, but I do have a few organizational things I haven’t gotten to so I’m working on those for …
