This summer my mom decided she wanted a new bedroom set. She shopped a little bit and decided the set she wanted was OURS! It was really hard for us to decide to get rid of ours because it was the first “real” furniture that we purchased eons ago.

We actually purchased this set before we even moved into this house. Some of you might recall that we bought our house from my parents and it’s the house I grew up in (since 2nd grade). My parents didn’t use the upstairs so dh and I were able to start painting and moving things into the upstairs long before we actually moved up here. So. The bedroom set was here months before we moved in. Anyway… that’s why it was hard to decide to get rid of it.

Above and below are pictures of our “old” set which was in excellent condition! It’s solid maple and we really did like it…. but you’ll see why the new set matches our safari decor later on in this series of pictures.

I have to point out the lamp in the picture above because it was accidentally knocked over and broke into a zillion pieces in the mess of moving things out of our bedroom… see picture below….

Nathan was trying to climb out of our bedroom (LOL). He lost his balance and reached out to catch himself. Unfortunately, he reached for the lamp knocking it over… sigh… so I had to go out shopping for a new lamp which you’ll see in the pictures below.
This entire project started one day when my mom was out shopping for a new bedroom set and found one that fit our room PERFECTLY! It’s a darker wood than our maple set so it matches the dark trim in our house better. And, the wrought iron features in it go great with our jungle/safari theme.

We already had most all of the decorations, pictures, etc. I only had to purchase a few new things. If you look at our old set you can see we had a large picture above the bed. We moved it to the hallway wall since it no longer fit above our bed. The new headboard is MUCH taller than our old one. I moved these 2 smaller pictures from the hallway to the left/right of the headboard which seemed to have just the right size spot for them! That left a big empty spot in the wall right in the middle so I had the flower arrangement made for it and it matches 2 other flower arrangments we have.. one beside the mirror/sink and the other on the mirrored chest.

Another thing I had to purchase was the the new lamp which you can see (2 pictures) above. Below is a close up of the lamp. I want to point it out because it has the COOLEST night light feature.

I love how it gives a nice soft glow throughout the night. It has just a little Christmas light type bulb in it. I’m SO glad Costco always seems to have what I need! Or is it that I usually only buy things at Costco.. so I don’t need anything if they don’t have it? Either way… the new lamp came from Costco and I didn’t have to go “shopping” for one!

Here are more pictures of the new bedroom set. You can’t really tell how tall the bed is from these pictures, but it’s much taller than our old one because we also bought a new matteress/box springs (from Costco again). Since we already had everything torn apart and we were already moving so many things (I lost count of how many trailer trips town we made this summer – lol) I decided to just buy it now and be done with all of this mess. We were already planning to purchase a new mattress/box spring this winter anyway.. so we just moved the purchase up a few months.

This dresser is, again (like our bed) , MUCH taller than our other one so I moved the giraffe from the floor to the dresser to try to offset the height. I really like it up on the dresser. When the boys were little they used to try to “ride” it and I was always worried it would get broken. I hope I don’t find either of them riding it clear up on this dresser!
Here is a closeup of the wrought iron detail in the headboard which is also the same detail shown in the above hutch/mirror.
Sorry for the flash in this next picture, but I was having a hard time getting the detail to show up without the flash. I really like the wrought iron handles on the dresser drawers. And, if you look closely the other thing I really like are the little wood plug type things that you see on the sides. They really add a lot to the look, imo. The thicker wrought iron detail that you see inbetween the drawers is also found on the footboard and takes a big chunk of it. I was too tired to go take another picture of the footboard, but I think you get the idea of what it looks like.
Looking in from the hallway leading to our bedroom.

This area remained the same.

Do you remember all of those boxes above that Nathan tripped over? Here Emily is aghast at some of the things she found in the dresser drawers… WAY OUTDATED clothes.. I won’t even tell you how long some of these things have been in there! It’s probably a good thing that my mom wanted our bedroom set otherwise I wouldn’t have taken the time to go through these things for another good 5-10 years, I’m sure. Spending any length of time going through my clothes was pretty far down on the million things to do list.

Thanks mom and dad for the new bedroom set! WE LOVE IT! Next time I’m over there I’ll take some pictures of our old bedroom set’s new home.. oh and I’ll post some pictures of the move down the road! What a sight that was!
Our room is officially “done.”! The trim has all been polished, every last piece of clothing (not in the closet) has been gone through and gotten rid of. NOTHING came back into the dresser drawers that we didn’t need or hadn’t used in the last few years. I’m saving the closets for next summer’s project.. as in I have plans for complete reorganization/remodeling of all of our closets next summer and hopefully by then we’ll even have a closet store of some sort close by.
