WE FOUND A TIGER IN OUR YARD

This morning while Josh was doing his math something out the window caught his eye and off he ran hollering at me to grab the camera and come quick! So.. of course we dropped our math books and ran outside – isn’t that why we homeschool? Guess what he found! A tiger salamander – at least that’s what kind we think it is. He was all stretched out walking across the edge of our grass when we went outside. I’m not sure how Josh spotted this from clear inside the house while doing his math (LOL). He must have been looking outside daydreaming for a moment.

Isn’t he a cute little thing (NOT!) I’m SO NOT an animal person! I’m pretty sure this is the first pet the kids have ever been allowed to have in the house besides the fish tank we had for a few years several years ago. He started to coil up the closer we got.

The boys wanted to catch it, but there was no way I was going to help with that! Good thing daddy and grandpa were working close by and could swing in to help! Nathan stood guard while Josh went to get a bucket to put over it until they arrived to help.

Good thing we already had a frog habitat from co-op. We quickly grabbed it from Josh’s desk to use temporarily until we can go to town tonight and get this thing a proper habitat. Besides the frogs will come anyday and they’ll need their habitat!

He didn’t really like the frog habitat. He kept trying to climb up the sides and seemed discontent….

….so the boys went outside to dig up some damp dirt to dump in the frog habitat.

Good thing this habitat has a locking lid! I wouldn’t want this critter escaping. This is the 2nd time this week I’ve told the boys THIS is why I don’t walk in the yard barefoot or after dark. The other night when we came home there were raccoons in the yard.

Emily watched all of this excitement from afar keeping herself safely positioned indoors behind the screen door!

Now getting a proper habitat for this creature is one more thing to add to the already long list of things to do in town tonight.

VERY cool! I think this is what we had in our backyard pond in CO.

I went out to get the paper the other morning. It was still dark, and it was drizzly. As I stepped off our porch, a little frog jumped up next to me. I did a little frog dance (as “little” as a 140 lb. woman can dance), went back in the house and waited for it to get a little lighter out.

Heather, at least your cat would make sure anything slimy wouldn’t get too far if it escaped!

No that’s an interesting salamander! Good Mom to let them keep it for awhile.

And I see hermit crabs up above. You’re getting braver!

LITTLE BITES OF HAPPINESS

Nathan’s friend, Noah, came over to hang out today and enjoy one last day of Christmas break before school resumes for both of them tomorrow. On the way home from picking him up at “the bridge,” I asked if the boys wanted some oatmeal for breakfast, but no. They wanted …

COON “HUNTIN”

Early this morning our dog went crazy with barking and howling.  After the sun rose, we found out what all the commotion had been about as he pointed us toward a coon he had treed during the night! Mid morning the boys decided they needed to take care of the …

DUCK PREP

I’m not sure what’s going on with these duck feathers on my dining room table, but the placemat has been moved over to make room for them! And the Egg Nog has been pushed aside to make room for marinating the duck meat!!    I’m not much for animals, dead …
