NOAH’S ARK

PhotobucketOn our trip to Medora, N.D. to round out our studies of Theodore Roosevelt (I’ll blog about that another day) last year, we stopped at the Dinosaur Museum to enhance our upcoming studies of archaeology and swimming creatures. The Dinosaur Museum had built the above replica of Noah’s ark to scale which the kids enjoyed viewing. PhotobucketI ordered The Ark by Arthur Geisert (author and illustrator) for Nathan to look through this year while the rest of us studied the history of Noah more indepth. It’s a very nice picture book with amazing detail in the drawings. The drawings were detailed enough to keep him busy discovering new things on each page for several hours not all in one sitting, of course – he’s only 5 you know – lol. Below is a picture of another Noah’s Ark replica. This one built in the Netherlands….Photobucket
A homeschool mom I know sent the following information to one of the local loops I moderate. It is a website which has pictures of a Noah’s Ark replica that is located in the Netherlands. Click on the right side of the screen at that website to see a slideshow of the ark.

Info from the website: The working Replica of Noah’s Ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That’s two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house. Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold. A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine -Biblical Scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and with occasional help from his son Roy.

Construction began in May 2005. On the uncovered top deck – not quite ready in time for the opening – will come a petting zoo, with baby lambs, chickens, goats, and one camel. Visitors on the first day were stunned. ‘It’s beyond comprehension’ said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw The Ark looming over the local landscape.’I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big.’

There is enough space near the keel for a 50-seat film theater where kids can watch a video that tells the story of Noah and his Ark. Huibers said he hopes the project will renew interest in Christianity in the Netherlands, where church going has fallen dramatically in the past 50 years.

I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking a trip to the Netherlands would be a PERFECT way to enhance our Noah’s Ark study! Some in my family like to travel and others do not. I keep threatening to take them to Egypt to ride the camels, visit King Tut’s tomb, and do some digging, but that has only appealed to a couple people. Perhaps a Netherlands trip would be more enjoyable for them.

We are enjoying a fictional book about Noah’s Ark right now: The Ark, the Reed, and the Fire Cloud. I posted my review
here
. One thing the story is bringing out to us is how utterly humongous the Ark was! Amazing!

Sign me up for the Netherlands trip!

I just requested the Geisert book from our interlibrary loan system. Thanks for the reference.

Back to our relaxed schooling for today:)

The last time we studied the Ancients (4 years ago), I borrowed this Gilgamesh Trilogy from someone.  As I was preparing our materials for this year, I remembered that I had planned to purchase this set for our own library the next time we study the Ancients. This summer I …
