EARTHMOVERS

Lately, it seems like we’ve had snow every other day. On the days when it’s warm and not snowing, the guys quickly head out back to work on the pad for the shop we’re building. They also had to build a new road to the back of our property. The other day, I posted pictures of the roller, dump truck, and dozer. Today I’ll post some of the other “toys” they’ve been using for this project. Boys do like to play in the dirt (LOL). Above, Nathan is checking out the tires and blade on the grader.

Before anyone asks, I’ll just say right up front that we have VERY STRICT rules about Nathan being around the equipment. He stays on the grass in our yard or on the sidewalk by our house. He doesn’t go anywhere near the equipment unless the guys know he’s coming out and are expecting him. In this picture, I had walked out with him and asked him to stand by the blade for a picture while we waited for Grandpa to come get him so he could ride in the dump truck.

Below you can see him safely inside the dump truck. Again, strict rules which he knows to follow. Walk far enough in front that you can see the eyes of whoever is driving and know they see you. Never walk behind anything, etc. And, I always make sure the guys know he’s coming out or I walk out with him.

He likes to ride in the dump truck, but some of the other pieces of equipment are just too noisy or dirty for him (LOL). Below is a picture of the new road that goes from the main road where you can see the dump truck turning in all the way to the back of our property.

So I was facing north for the picture above. Then, then I walked to the back of the property to take another picture facing north so you can get an idea of where the shop will be in relation to the house. In the picture below you can just barely see the top of the 2nd story portion of our house. It’s aways behind the shed that ou can see. That shed will be moved to the front of the shop and will act as a front for the shop. It’ll be sided to match the house which will hopefully help the shop look like it belongs with the house. The shop will nearly the same color as the shutters around the windows on the house.

PhotobucketAt the back of the property where I was standing to take the above picture, they dug a BIG LONG HOLE to get some more gravel for the pad. I didn’t realize they had such a big hole out there or I would have gone out to take a picture before they started filling it in. Before they started filling it back in with dirt, it was taller than this scraper.PhotobucketThis is a scaper that my dad has had since he first started the business a long time ago… 30 years or more? Not sure how many. I’ll have to ask him. Tim’s using it to scrape up some dirt which he’ll dump in the hole.PhotobucketBelow he’s headed back down into the long narrow hole to dump the load of dirt.PhotobucketThen, Josh comes along with the dozer to push it around and smooth it out before Tim comes with the next load.PhotobucketBack when I was a young kid we had an old dozer without a cab. Josh has it EASY running this nice dozer with a cab and heater!PhotobucketThe other thing he has to do is go along the edge of the hole to push dirt in from along the edge.Photobucket

And the other thing he has to do (LOL) – the guys are sure glad to have an extra hand with these types of things and they sure give Josh a lot to do – is give Tim a push while he’s loading so he doesn’t get stuck since the ground is a little slippery because of all the moisture. He knows right where to push, when to stop, etc.

And, one last picture. This one I’m posting to point out the ear plugs! A must-have when you’re running this very loud heavy equipment!

Hmmmmm….. I wonder if they intentionally forget to take out their ear plugs when they come in the house (LOL). Nah… they wouldn’t do that to me. Would they?

You do realize you just posted every boys dream post here, don’t you? I will have to get my youngest in here to look at all your cool machines!!! 🙂

LITTLE BITES OF HAPPINESS

Nathan’s friend, Noah, came over to hang out today and enjoy one last day of Christmas break before school resumes for both of them tomorrow. On the way home from picking him up at “the bridge,” I asked if the boys wanted some oatmeal for breakfast, but no. They wanted …

LET IT SNOW

Being in the road building business, one thing we don’t have to worry about is being snowed in. As long as the weather isn’t so cold that we can’t start the equipment, you’ll find our men out and about plowing everyone’s driveways up and down our road and a few …

TODDLER AT WORK

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a firm believer in giving kids meaningful “work” to do :). Charlie is “working” in this photo.   Fourth-generation construction business owner coming right up 🙂
