PARALLEL PARKING IN PARIS

No. I didn’t have to do any parallel parking in Paris (LOL) since we didn’t rent a car there. But, Emily noticed that all of the cars on the streets where bumper to bumper. LITERALLY. I mean as in they were one right after, bumper to bumper, along the entire street with NO space inbetween them at all.

She randomly stated she sure wouldn’t like to try parallel parking in Paris because there is literally NO WAY you could backup and inch your way out of the parking spot which led to Michaela giving an explanation that in Paris people leave their cars in neutral. When you need to leave your parking spot you put your car in gear pushing the car ahead or behind you forward or backward so you can get your car out. WEIRD! I guess that explains why their cars were all dinged up.

I forgot to ask her how you would parallel park your car. I guess you would go to the end of the line and park there? Does anyone know?

Anyway. An interesting tidbit I didn’t want to forget about so I’m putting it here on the blog. I thought I took a picture of the bumper to bumper cars, but now I’m not finding it. If I find it later, I’ll post it. In the entry below you can see a row of cars behind Emily in the picture of her eating her pastry. This was the same morning she made the parallel parking observation.

Oh my goodness! I could never do it! I can parallel park but tend to need space to do it. The kids laughed at me last week. We were downtown and came out to find someone had parked very, very close to my back bumper. I had pulled up close to the guy in front as it was. It was really tight and it took some work to get out of that spot. The kids were convinced I wouldn't be able to do it. I was very happy to prove them wrong!!

Hey maybe in Europe they have tires that turn sideways and they just easily pull into or out of the spots!! Technology will get there eventually. Nice to imagine though. That is how all inventions start.

Hi, I followed your link from the SHS group and I love your blog! I enjoyed your posts about France and found the parallel parking post in particular very interesting. I live in New Zealand and parallel parking is extremely common in our country. I had no idea it was (for want of a better word) "unusual". It's very easy to manoeuvre and park in this way and sometimes only leave a matter of inches between the front and rear vehicles. The "trick" is to pull up and be in-line with the front vehicle before reversing into the parking space.

I'll be sure to vote for your blog!

MUSEE RODIN

One of the many things on my Paris “hope to see” list was the Musee Rodin.  Because we had a mile-long list of things to see today and because I was the only one with this on their must-see list, we opted to make this a very quick stop (as in probably only …

BIKING THROUGH PARIS

If I don’t already sound like a broken record when I say I researched all of the xyz options for abc before we booked our trip (or chose this crockpot or picked that curriculum, etc), just stick around awhile and I’m sure you’ll eventually come to that conclusion (LOL) since …

A.M. VISIT TO EIFFEL TOWER

I’m sure everyone would have preferred to sleep in a little longer today (9/26), but again, trying to avoid jet lag I scheduled us to be up and out of the hotel by 7:00 a.m. I actually wanted to leave at 6:30 but Michaela thought that was way too early …
