ROAD BUILDING/dynamite

When the going gets tough, bring on the dynamite!  The guys are building a road in some very rocky terrain out north of us.  It’s much too rocky to dig with the dozers so they drilled some holes, filled them with dynamite, and blew up the rock!  Above, Josh is waiting for the signal to push the ignite button.  And, no Josh isn’t just standing there all alone.  I just cropped it so he’s the only one in the photo.  The main guy with the radio is right there beside/behind him!

The wire wrapped around the orange thing in the first picture is connected to the dynamate in each of the 80+ holes.  Below, the first couple explosions.  They are all set to go off one after another.  I’m including a few pictures of the explosion in sequence and if you look toward the bottom you’ll see the pile of rock that’s left covering this road after they’re done blasting.

The last picture above is mostly dust and smoke as the rock settles.  This is what it looks like after the blasting and after it’s all clear to take a look.  The guys are looking things over to see how it turned out.

Josh and Tim take a closer look as Grandpa climbs the rock pile with the big dozer.  I like this picture because you can really see the size of the rock and the dozer with Tim and Josh standing in close proximity.

After Grandpa reached the top, he joined them to survey the area.

The picture below gives you a better look at the type of rock they’re trying to work with out there.

I don’t usually blog much about work related things, but I figured I may as well this year since the job is close enough for me to go out every other day or so to take some pictures and report the progress!  We’ll call it ROAD BUILDING 101.  I hope you enjoy this peek into one of the many types of work we (said very loosely, of course) do.

LOL – funny you'd be blogging about road building. I've been thinking of you as I watch the construction work around here and have thought I should snap photos…but I'm usually trying to maneuver around the mess. LOL

Fun post! Your boys will have rich memories to share:)

My husband tells great stories about helping his dad prepare their grass airstrip. They used dynamite to blast stubborn tree stumps out of the ground!

COOL!!! Looks like something from Little House on Prairie when Pa and Mr. Edwards had to go off the farm to find work and went to the railroad. LOL.

LET IT SNOW

Being in the road building business, one thing we don’t have to worry about is being snowed in. As long as the weather isn’t so cold that we can’t start the equipment, you’ll find our men out and about plowing everyone’s driveways up and down our road and a few …

TODDLER AT WORK

Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a firm believer in giving kids meaningful “work” to do :). Charlie is “working” in this photo.   Fourth-generation construction business owner coming right up 🙂

TICKLER FILES

I have always used a Tickler Filing system for bill paying and other things which have dated deadlines.  I have 6 such red files which are numbered with the dates as follows:  1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25, and 26-31.  I don’t have enough dated deadlines to warrant a file for …
