TODAY IS A SNOW DAY!

It actually snowed here on Monday, but it didn’t “count officially” in our book because it didn’t stick to the ground. However, the flakes were BIG FAT HEAVY WET ones which fell on and off all day that day. Today, the snowflakes were very fine and wet, but they stuck so it’s now “official”. We’ve had our first snow day. It’s sort of hard to see the snow in this picture because it’s so fine, but I did manage to get this picture which sort of captured how quickly the snow was falling if you look closely at the streaks against the black part of the window.

Here you can see Josh outside making a snow angel with a TANK TOP on. What a silly boy! It was just barely in the low 30’s so it wasn’t *that* cold out, but still it was funny to see him outside in a tanktop rolling in the snow (LOL).
We have a tradition in our home of celebrating the first snow fall by sitting on the couch and reading Snowflake Bentley. We have done this since Amanda was in early elementary… so a good ten years or better. This reminds me that last year I wanted to look for another one of the Bentley books specifically the one with snowflake photographs. Maybe I”ll do that tomorrow.Back to our tradition. We sit on the couch while drinking hot chocolate and looking out the window! Back when Amanda was playing her flute I used to ask her to play The First Snowfall by Michael W. Smith on her flute which is still one of my favorite instrumental songs, btw. We didn’t actually “do” our SNOW DAY tradition because Nathan and Amanda were gone and I really want to include Nathan in the reading. Amanda won’t mind missing it, however. (LOL). Josh, Emily and I went ahead and brewed some home made apple cider and enjoyed it together as we worked on a few computer things.
I had NO IDEA we would be waking up to snow this a.m., but here it is. I’m glad I reorganized all of my school books this summer because I quickly found the Snowflake Bentley book on the misc shelf sorted by season! I was tempted to put it on the chronological shelves, but decided it needed to be on the “special” misc shelf instead. Now, I’m glad I did that because I walked right to it (LOL). Three years ago we added another SNOW DAY book to our reading activity thanks to a fellow homeschooling mom giving it to us as a gift when she stopped by to visit one day. It is the Snow Ponies which is a magical story about Old Man Winter’s snow ponies. He lets them out of their stable and everything they touch turns to snow. It’s a cute book if you don’t mind a bit of magical fantasy. The illustrations are very nice.
I couldn’t resist taking a picture of our neighbors horses out in the pasture next to us since they reminded me so much of the Snow Ponies story book.
The snow didn’t come down very hard, but it did snow off and on all morning and afternoon and stuck until mid afternoon. Here you can see the window of my YUKON (LOL) covered in snow! I’m not quite ready to have to start scraping windows.

Now the day is over, the snow has quit, and it has all melted. Hopefully, we’ll have an Indian Summer and return to some nice fall days.
