LEAF HUNT & PHOTOSYNTHESIS

I can’t find a link to the Scholastic book, Going on a Leaf Hunt, that the botany teachers read to the little kids but it was SO CUTE! They read the book while searching all over the building for various types of leaves which had been preplaced around the building. They even made a WATERFALL with leaves on top of, around, and below the water fountain! The kids arrived at the waterfall after pretending to row across the lake (the foyer) and climbing the hill (the steps from the 1st to 2nd floor – lol). They collected leaves at each location.

After the got back to class they picked out the leaves that they wanted to use in an art project.

When they were at the waterfall a SKUNK jumped out from the closet! The kids really liked that part although a few of them were scared until they realized it was the other teacher (LOL). It was the CUTEST costume!
I helped Nathan with his art project.

He made an elk or a deer depending on when he’s telling the story.
Here are all of the kids in Nathan’s preschool botany class showing off their plant art pieces.
The little ones also did leaf rubbings during one of the leaf unit classes.

The older kids played a rousing game of FLYSWATTER as they recalled facts they learned at home about photosynthsis. The teacher asks the question and they run to the board and put their flyswatter on the correct answer.

Cool looks like both Josh and Nathan are enjoying their botany classes at co-op. I forget, are they using the apologia stuff? We’ve not done that one yet but will finish our zoology by January. I need to look ahead. LOL Not sure that winter is the time to do botany…but this is the south. LOL

Yes, it’s Apologia. We’re doing the botany book and it’s GREAT! We have skipped around so that we could do all of the leaf collecting earlier this fall, but it’s been just fine. You should have a better time with it then us since you are in a warmer climate!

Okay, I am such a LOSER mom with science! This stuff looks terrific! While I love Jeannie’s science, it took us 1.5 years to get through Astronomy. I bought Botany, but it looked like *I* needed to do too much work. We are doing well moving through Zoology, and THANKFULLY my wonderful dh already has several bird feeders up, along with a stream in the backyard (which the birds bathe in). 🙂

It’s not so bad. I read the book to Josh and then he does his own drawings and such. I have to help with a few things – get supplies, remind to water, etc… but for the most part he does it all himself… of course, the grandparents made the light huts and that was a big help! We’re really enjoying the botany book!

I love your co-op! I think it’d be a very long commute for me though.lol I love that they are doing all these activities with the littles. I’m sure these will be great keep-sakes.

More great pictures! I’m going to show these to my kids tomorrow and see if they want to do some leaf art before the leaves are all covered in snow. That is one art project we have never tried.

The leaf art was a LOT of fun. I’m not certain that idea came from the book though. I think it was something the teachers came up with on their own.

Lisa, it would be a long commute but that’s ok. You could at least come once.. you know when you come to go skiing (LOL)
