Earlier this week, Emily went to the DMV to take the written portion of the driver’s license test. She scored 100% on her first try! YIPPEE! We’re so proud of her. YEA! For the next 6 months, I will be a lot more productive because I have a zillion things I can do while sitting in the passenger seat supervising her driving. I’ll spare you the long list since this is a blog entry about Em not me. I have other thoughts regarding the significance of this day, but I’ll save them for a separate mommy sobbing post a little later so I don’t squelch our excitement over Em’s milestone this week.

Ok. So, this isn’t really her first time behind the wheel, but it IS the first time for her to legally be in the driver’s seat. Don’t you LOVE the sunglasses! Her friends gave them to her for her birthday. She was a little nervous to drive today because I needed to go downtown. She wanted me to drive. Sorry, honey! For the next 6 months, you’ll be driving ME where *I* want to go! So, her first day she logged nearly 3 hours of driving. She’ll have her required 50 hours in no time.
From the DMV she drove to the library where she had to park our big boat in a not very big parking spot. She did a GREAT job! Then, she had to back said boat out of tiny parking spot. She was relieved that one of the cars beside us left before we did. After we left the library, I had her drove all around the downtown area winding our way to the west end where she had to park at the mall.
What is a trip to town without a stop at the gas station? Mean mom that I am, I made her fill up the tank! And, I conveniently chose THE MOST DIFFICULT gas station to get into and out of so she’d get to practice patience and discernment while waiting on just the right time to cross the oncoming traffic lane to get into the opposite lane where we needed to be. I could have had her fill up at Costco, but that would have been too easy (LOL)! Af the gas station, there was the 40 minute drive home from town to pick up our dinner at grandma’s house. Shhhh… don’t tell anyone, but driving from grandma’s house to our house is really nothing new….
For quite awhile after getting the permanent license, we don’t allow our new drivers to navigate the two lane highway, but while I’m still driving with her she needs the experience driving it. So, on our way to town the next day she drove on the two lane highway reciting all of the things the kids all hear us say at each hazardous spot along the way. Coming home she drove on the interstate after dark with the “watch for and deer & why you should always keep your windows clean” lectures (LOL)! She’s already heard them a 100x…. now it’s time for her to repeat them to us while she’ s driving.
Congratulations, Em! This is a giant leap forward on the path to adulthood!
