I use method #1. We cook bacon so infrequently that the mess isn’t too bad. I like it so done that you can hold the very tip and it is completely rigid. No soggy bacon here!
I have several recipes that call for bacon, but I always dread making them because the bacon is such a pain to cook.
I’ve tried several methods.
1. A long time ago I had this microwave safe dish for making bacon. It had grooves in it so the grease would go in the grooves and the bacon would sit on top. This was a PAIN because the little indented area where you were supposed to drain the grease was too small and grease would usually run everywhere. And, it was a PAIN to clean.
2. Then I tried making it in the microwave without a special dish. I used a regular plate with a couple of thick paper plates on top with several paper towels on top of that and a couple of paper towels over the top of that. This made cleaning much easier and actually worked pretty good. I’m not sure why I don’t use this method anymore.
3. Someone gave me a new fangled microwave bacon cooker that has 2 things that stand up out of a deep bowl. The bacon is draped across these 2 things and the grease has plenty of room to accumulate in the bottom. However, the bacon doesn’t cook evenly at all. The part of each piece that is toward the center is not cooked enough while the parts of each piece facing the outside is cooked too much.
4. I’ve done the old fry-it-in-a-pan method, but that’s a pain – literally because I’m always getting burned from the grease splattering everywhere. I like this method the best (other than the mess and pain from splattering) because the bacon is nice and crispy and cooked evenly. but it IS time consuming because you have to stand there and turn all the pieces quite often.
5. I heard about making bacon in the oven from my SHS friends, but I couldn’t remember what that was all about and I knew my friend Karen (IRL and blogging friend) had tried it. So, she told me how she did it – just put the bacon on the cookie sheet and let it bake for however long it takes to get it to the desired crispness.
This worked GREAT! I didn’t have to stand over it, it all cooked evenly, it was easy to dump the grease, etc.
Who would have known one could make this long of a blog entry over how to fry bacon? (LOL)! Which method do you prefer and please share any ideas not already listed above! I’ll try your method and review it here on my blog (LOL)!
